Doi Inthanon National Park Birdwatching Itinerary

Special Notice: Area for birding at Doi Inthanon National Park is very large with altitudes ranging from 400 meters to 2565 meters. We start birding at 1700 meters in Altitude for mountain forest birds. Your experienced birding guide will determine which areas we visit. Some areas might be visited more than once so you get the best opportunity to see and photograph birds you have yet to spot. Your guide, vehicle and driver will be with you all the time so you can work with them and say which birds you are most interested in.

Day 1,
We will meet you at your hotel in Chiang Mai. at 5:15 AM and transfer to Doi Inthanon National Park with your local experienced English speaking birding guide. We start at an altitude of 1700 meters. There is a 1 kilometer secetion of evergreen forest and pine that support a variety of bird species near the road on the forest edge. This zone has a higher bird species diversity than any other on the mountain between sunrise and 10 AM.: Among its bird species are the Mountain Imperial Pigeon, Golden-throated Barbet, Asian Emerald Cuckoo, Grey-chinned minivet, Short-billed Minivet and long tailed Minivet, yellow-bellied Fantail, Stripe-breasted Woodpecker, Bay Woodpecker, Maroon Oriole, Yellow-cheeked Tit, Golden Babbler, White-necked Laughingthrush, Blue-winged Minla, Grey-cheeked Fulvetta, Rufous-backed Sibia, Small and and Large Niltava, Pale Blue Flycatcher, Buff-throated, Yellow-streaked and Radde’s Warblers,Black-throated and Mrs Gould’s Sunbird, among many more. In the more disturbed edges may be found the Silver-eared Mesia, Spectacled Barwing and Mountain Tailorbird. Tall dead trees are a favoured haunt of the Chestnut-vented Nuthatch.

We then travel to the Summit where there are not many species because of the altitude and cold weather but well worth the visit.. The birds found here include the Silver-eared laughingthrush, Chestnut-tailed Minla, Dark-backed Sibia, Spectacled Barwing, White-browed Shortwing, Chestnut-bellied Rockthrush, Green-tailed Sunbird, Ashy Wood Pigeon, Wedged-tailed Green Pigeon, Greenish Warbler, Blue Whistling Thrush and Grey-sided Thrush and Rufous-throated Partridge are all fairly common if you know where to look.

We then travel down the mountain to an altitude of about 1300 meters and have lunch at a Thai restaurant. After lunch we bird along the streams for the White-crowned, Slaty backed and black-backed Forktail, Plumbeous and White-capped water restart. We then visit another area for the Scarlet Minivet, Speckled and White-browed Piculet, Tickell’s and Hill Blue Flycatcher, Little Spiderhunter, White Tailed Robin, Siberian Blue Robin, Hooded Pitta, Rufous-bellied and Small Niltava, Puff-throated Bulbul, Black-capped pygmy and Grey headed Woodpecker, Japanese, Oriental and Chestnut-flanked White, Grey, yellow and Citrine Wagtail, Blue-throated Barbet, Black headed and Flavescent Bulbul, Common Rosefinch, Siberian Blue Robin, Yellow-bellied Flowerpecker, Velvet-fronted and Chestnut-vented Nuthatch, White-throated Fantail. Return to your hotel in Chiang Mai around 5 PM (L)
